A new standard parallel established, when required, for control where the original standard parallels or correction lines were placed at intervals of 30 or 36 miles. Auxiliary standard parallels are used in extending old surveys and for controlling new surveys. Such a line may be given a local name such as Fifth Auxiliary Standard Parallel North or Cedar Creek Correction Line.

A horizontal rod with a heavy mass at one end and suspended in such a manner that the mass can move freely in a horizontal plane. The most common form of horizontal pendulum has the rod resting at one end in a socket in a rigid, vertical post and connected near the other end (the one carrying the mass) by a thread to the top of the post, so that thread, rod, and the part of the post from the top down to the socket form a right triangle. When the post moves because of seismic waves, the mass tends to remain in the same place because of inertia. It therefore appears to oscillate horizontally, although it is actually the post which is moving. In the Zöllner form of horizontal pendulum, the end opposite that carrying the mass does not rest on the post but is connected by a thread to the bottom of the post, thus keeping the rod horizontal.

(1) The northern intersection of the celestial meridian with the horizon. If the observer is close enough to the North Pole that the Pole is included within his horizon, the north point lies south of the North Pole. (2) An arrow-like symbol indicating the direction north on a map or chart. Additional arrows specially marked may be shown to indicate the directions of other meridians which may interest the user of the map. An asterisk is often used to indicate astronomic north, a full barb to indicate grid north, and a half-barb to indicate magnetic north. Where magnetic meridians are shown, the date and declination from astronomic north should be indicated.
