A commutator-type electric motor in which the field windings are connected in shunt (parallel) with the armature. Shunt-wound motors do not have a large amount of starting torque, but they operate at a relatively constant speed, and they do not need to have a mechanical load connected to them to prevent them from overspeeding.
Shunt-wound motors are used for blowers and other low-torque applications.
Industry:Aviation
A commutator-type electric motor that has the field coils connected in series with the armature. A series-wound motor has a high starting torque, but if it is not operated with a mechanical load connected to it, it will accelerate to a speed that will destroy it. Starter motors for both reciprocating engines and gas turbine engines are series-wound.
Industry:Aviation
A compact arrangement of air conditioning servicing equipment. A charging stand contains a vacuum pump, a manifold gage set, and a method of measuring and dispensing the refrigerant.
Industry:Aviation

Industry:Aviation
A compartment in the structure of an aircraft. A bay is the portion of the structure between adjacent bulkheads, frames, or struts.

A compass error caused by the difference in the locations of the earth’s geographic north pole and its magnetic north pole. All navigation charts and maps are drawn with reference to the geographic north pole, and all magnetic compasses point to the magnetic north pole. These two locations are not the same, and they are only in alignment along the agonic line.
At any particular location on the surface of the earth, the variation error is the same for all headings. Variation is called declination in land navigation.
Industry:Aviation
A complete electronic flight instrumentation system that includes the EICAS (engine indicating and crew alerting system) and the ECAM (electronic centralized monitoring) system.
Industry:Aviation
A complete inspection of the airframe and powerplant required for FAA-certificated aircraft operating under 14 CFR Part 91 (General Operating and Flight Rules) that are not on one of the authorized special inspection programs.
An annual inspection must be conducted every 12 calendar months by an Aviation Maintenance Technician who holds an Aircraft rating with an Inspection Authorization. The scope of an annual inspection is the same as that of a 100-hour inspection.
Industry:Aviation
A complete series of events or operations that recur regularly. The last event ends at the same place the first begins, and as soon as the last event is completed, the first is ready to begin again.
Industry:Aviation
A completely ionized gas, consisting of equal numbers of positive ions and free electrons. Plasma is electrically neutral.
