A fixed, nozzle-like opening near the leading edge of an airplane wing, ahead of the aileron. A slot acts as a duct to force air down on the upper surface of the wing when the airplane is flying at a high angle of attack. Forcing the air down on the top of the wing allows the airplane to fly at a higher angle of attack before it stalls.
Since the slot is located ahead of the aileron, the aileron remains effective even at very high angles of attack.
Industry:Aviation
A fixture that allows a shaft to be centered and rotated to measure any out-of-round condition.
Industry:Aviation
A fixture that attaches to the structure of an aircraft to fit the jack that is used to raise the aircraft for weighing or servicing.
Industry:Aviation
A flame produced by an oxy-acetylene torch when there is too much acetylene gas for the amount of oxygen being metered by the torch.
A carburizing flame, identified by a definite feather around the inner cone, is not normally used, because it adds carbon to the molten metal and makes the weld weaker than the metal being welded.
Industry:Aviation
A flame that uses the chemically correct ratio of fuel gas and oxygen. A neutral flame in an oxyacetylene torch has an almost white, rounded inner cone and an envelope of light blue flame. Too much oxygen changes a neutral flame into an oxidizing flame, and the inner cone becomes pointed. Too much acetylene changes a neutral flame into a carburizing, or reducing, flame, and a feather appears around the inner cone.
Industry:Aviation
A flammable liquid ketone used as a solvent and as an ingredient in many types of aircraft finishes.
Industry:Aviation
A flammable, colorless hydrocarbon liquid (CH3)2CHCH2C(CH3)3, used as a component of aviation gasoline and as the datum for rating the antidetonation characteristics of gasoline. The high critical pressure and temperature of iso-octane make it resistant to detonation.
Industry:Aviation
A flammable, oily, aromatic, hydrocarbon fluid. Xylene is mixed with other hydrocarbon fluids and used as a solvent and as an additive to improve the combustion characteristics of reciprocating engine fuels.
Industry:Aviation
A flare made on a piece of rigid tubing in which the tubing in the flare is doubled back on itself to produce two thicknesses of metal in the flare.
A double flare is acceptable in aircraft fluid systems on soft aluminum tubing having an outside diameter no larger than 3/8 of an inch.
Industry:Aviation
A flare made on a piece of rigid tubing in which there is only one thickness of the tubing material in the flare.
