Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A form of airplane wing structure which uses only one spar, or main spanwise structural member, to carry the loads.
Industry:Aviation
A form of alcohol used as a coolant for liquid-cooled aircraft engines and as an anti-icing agent. It is also used in automobile engines as a permanent antifreeze.
Industry:Aviation
A form of almost pure carbon made by burning oil or coal in an atmosphere in which there is not enough oxygen for complete combustion. Lampblack is used for making brushes for electric motors and generators, for the graphite in lead pencils, for the pigment in paint, and for mixing with rubber for making tires.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aneroid barometer whose dial is calibrated in feet or meters, rather than units of pressure. A pneumatic altimeter has a barometric scale that can be adjusted to any desired reference pressure, and the pointers of the instrument measure the difference between the existing pressure and this reference pressure in terms of feet or meters.
When the local altimeter setting is set on the barometric scale, the altimeter shows indicated altitude. When standard sea level pressure of 29.92 inches of mercury or 1013.2 millibars is set on the barometric scale, the altimeter shows pressure altitude.
Another type of altimeter is an absolute (radar or radio) altimeter. It measures the actual distance between an aircraft and the terrain below it by measuring the time needed for an electrical signal to pass from the aircraft to the ground and back to the aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A form of antifriction bearing that supports the load on hardened steel cylinders rolling between two hardened and polished races. Roller bearings are used for radial loads, rather than thrust loads.
Industry:Aviation
A form of antifriction bearing that uses hardened steel rollers between hardened and polished, cone-shaped steel races. Tapered roller bearings take thrust loads as well as radial loads.
Industry:Aviation
A form of arc welding in which the arc and the metal being welded are shielded, or covered, with an inert gas or with melted flux that keeps air away from the molten metal in the weld.
Industry:Aviation
A form of automated machine, used to replace a human operator in some tasks that are dangerous or highly repetitive. Robots can be programmed to sense certain conditions and act in the correct way for the conditions that exist.
Industry:Aviation
A form of automatic safety control. An interlock in a device can prevent an action from occurring until the device is ready for the action.
An interlock can be installed on the door of a compartment so the door cannot be opened when the equipment inside the compartment is operating. When the door is opened, the interlock switch automatically turns the power off and discharges any high-voltage capacitors inside the housing.
Industry:Aviation
A form of backup brake system used in some large aircraft multiple-disk power brake installations.
Wheels using the A & B system have several small actuating cylinders built into the brake housing. Half of the cylinders are actuated by fluid from the A-hydraulic system and the others by fluid from the B-system.
The brakes operate normally with either system.
